Decking Screws – Drive Better with Buildex®

Decking Screws – Drive Better with Buildex®

Every deck comes down to the fasteners.

Pre-drilling that doubles the job. Cam-out that chews the head and the board. Splits that show up in the finished surface. Screws that fail two summers in.

Buildex® decking screws are engineered to eliminate all of it.

True self-drilling into hardwood and softwood, clean drive under load, and a flush finish you don't have to apologise for.

Simple. Premium. Performance-led. Available now at Bunnings.

Performance Without Compromise

Every feature on this screw does one of three jobs: drive fast, reduce splitting, hold.

TriCut Self-Drilling Tip

Patented design delivering superior drilling speed, easy start and a professional finish.

No wandering, no false starts.

T20 Star Drive

More contact points between bit and screw means better grip and less cam-out.

No chewed heads at the end of a long day.

A driver bit is included in every pack.

Super Thread

Serrated W-cut with high TPI.

The serrations cut through the timber so the screw drives faster, and the high thread count locks it in for superior hold.

Self-Countersinking Head

Embeds neatly as it seats and minimises splitting of the top fibres.

That's what gives you a clean, flush line down the board.

Compliant with AS 3566.1 and AS 3566.2.

Built for Australian Decking

304 stainless steel across the range: coastal and exposed decks are well covered.

Softwood or hardwood, both covered.

The difference isn't the screw you pick, it's the prep: hardwood joists always get pre-drilled.

Timber-to-timber only. Decks with steel joists need the Buildex® range built for metal — different product, different job.

Find Your Screw

One number matters most: 35. Your screw needs at least 35 mm embedded into the timber frame. Take the board plus any build-up, then add 35 mm minimum.

Length Gauge Use
55 mm 10G Deck boards up to 20 mm thick
65 mm 10G Deck boards up to 30 mm thick
Job Size Pack
Repair or small job 50
Standard deck 250
Large deck 500
Trade volume 1,000
Board Width Screws per m²
90 mm 40–50
140 mm 30–35

Based on joists at 450 mm centres, two screws at every joist crossing. Add 10% for wastage — on 90 mm boards, call it 55 per square metre.

How to Install

  1. 1

Pick your length. Board plus build-up, minimum 35 mm into the frame.

  2. 2

Pre-drill hardwood joists. Every time — hardwood is dense enough that even a self-drilling screw needs a pilot hole in the joist.

  3. 3

Use an impact driver or drill driver on high speed. Firm, continuous pressure the whole way down.

  4. 4

Don't stop and restart under load. This is how screws snap.

  5. 5

Ease off the RPM as the head nears the timber and let it seat flush.

FAQs

Not for standard decking. Hardwood joists are the exception — pre-drill those every time.

Board plus build-up, with at least 35 mm into the frame.

If you remember one number, it's 35.

T20 star drive.

The star pattern is why the bit won't slip under load, and one is included in every pack.

Usually the wrong screw, the wrong length, or no pre-drill where it's needed.

The TriCut tip cuts its way in rather than forcing the timber apart, and the self-countersinking head embeds cleanly instead of wedging the top fibres open.

It won't replace good prep though.

Almost always stop-start driving.

High speed, one continuous drive, ease off at the end.

Yes.

The range is 304 stainless steel, so coastal and exposed decks are well covered.
