Fixing Roof Sheeting to Timber and Light Metals

The Best Screws to Fasten Roof Sheeting to Timber and Light Metal

Type 17 screws are traditionally used for metal cladding to timber batten roofing jobs. Buildex® fasteners provide a superior seal due to their pointed design and under-roof corrosion protection.

The T17 tips remove the need to pre-drill and also mitigate timber splitting, improving installation quality in timber while providing strong pull-out strength and high strip torque.

  • Secure fixings easily, even under movement
  • Avoid leaky roofs with its watertight seal washer
  • Less chance of cracking or chipping from the fastener
  • Minimal susceptibility to rust
  • Fewer callbacks
  • Longer roof life and a more durable roof structure

FAQs for Type 17 screws

What materials to avoid with Type 17s

Note that Type 17s are not designed to go through metal purlins.

How to avoid burring or head damage with Type 17 screws

To prevent burring, head damage, or stripping, use the correct tools and follow proper installation techniques.

For fastening metal sheeting to timber battens, choose roofing screws designed specifically for metal-to-timber fixing. For detailed technical specifications, refer to the Datasheet links in the table provided.

What is the minimum embedment depth for roofing screws into timber?

Buildex® Type 17 fasteners, installed into timber, should achieve a minimum embedment depth of 25mm.

However, the final fastener selection must always comply with the cladding supplier’s fastening recommendations. Refer to the Datasheet links above for specific product information.

Why corrosion resistance is important for your fasteners

To ensure the longevity of your roofing fastener, a protective coating improves durability in harsh environments such as marine or industrial zones. Depending on the coating level and class, it provides an additional barrier against corrosion.

The highest-resistant Climaseal® 4 and 5 coatings are tested for use in Category 4 and 5 environments – that is, places where high humidity, moisture, and salt exposure are common. This is especially necessary in environments where metal roofs demand strong protection to hold up to natural elements.

What is COLORMATCH®?

COLORMATCH® is a superior powder-coat made to suit a wide range of COLORBOND® rooflines. They feature a tough, chip-resistant finish which comes in 11 colours.

Type 17s can be painted to match COLORBOND® sheeting products, creating a consistent colour finish with your roof installations.

If you’re after a specific COLORBOND® colour that’s not in the range, get in touch with the local sales team to place a custom order.
